Inspiration Monday : Jon Reyman

This monday morning i was watching this video with top stylist and  it was absolutely everything i needed to hear.
"MOVE mountains to be HAPPY"
One of my favorite interactive speeches I have heard in a while because he sees our industry the way it is. Not sugar coated and with the emphasis that if you are happy doing what you love , money will follow.

When it comes to choosing your tribe, be surrounded with people that will want to grow you and serve a purpose in your life. Wether is an employer, a friend, a coworker in jon reymans words
" If you are not NICE, go away"

HAPPY MONDAY !

BEHIND THE SCENES: COLLABORATE

Many artists i have come across specially NEW artist have me in shock when they say " I don't collaborate, i can only do it if there is compensation" whoa!
This is always a shock to me because i believe that to be able to charge and gain credibility as a charging artist you need:
Credentials (schooling, certification), Expertise (years or experience in the field), Hefty Resume/Portfolio
If you have one or neither of this and feel weird about collaboration please keep reading.
Hair prep!

If you are interested in the paying gigs you must know that people willing to pay you want to see how amazing you are, the things you have worked on and how much your work is worth.

For a lot of us the challenge right out of school or beginning in the creative field is that we are all qualified, we went to school, we can do the job but we don't have anything to show for it,
by that i mean the expertise , the resume and the portfolio.
on set playing with AVEDA CONTROL FORCE hairspray and lighting.

The easiest and best way to build your brand is believe it or not COLLABORATING.
My boss ALLEN RUIZ always says "What we do at work fills our pockets, what we do outside of work fills our hearts" It is SO true. Not only do you do what you love and have full creative freedom when you collaborate in projects but you also you get to network and build your brand as an individual creative.

The importance of being qualified is just as equal as to be experienced, the experience you will get on sets you can't really measure in money.  Me for example working with my friend Cyler we both work late nights at the salon followed by an early morning after that we collaborate with Photographers. Yes it is our weekend and yes we would rather be having a margarita, but truth is we love what we do so much that being on a set on a late weekend night really fills our bucket.
Even though i don't get paid i can tell you i have met some incredible models (for future projects) I've strengthen my skills and i get to create beautiful images for my portfolio.
me and cyber doing our thangggg

It is very true that your brand will be built based on the people you work with, so choose who you want to collaborate with, if your collaboration won't grow you or showcase your work at your standard its okay to say no, however always keep in mind you want to leave a window open instead of shutting the door ,tearing the castle down and burn the bridge.

Be polite, be kind and be TRUE with you art.
But most of all BE HUMBLE , people don't want to work with a "know it all" or a "been there done that" type of person.
Find people that speak your creative language, that are willing to put in the work you are putting in, have similar creative eyes and people you just really enjoy working with. I promise it won't feel like work and it will expand your portfolio and skills.

I am always open for collaborations so please contact me with any inquiries or questions in CONTACT page

also THANKS TO:
Kristyn Miller for the great studio experience
+
Cyler Daigle for being  super to collaborate with and great Makeup artist

Rookie Feature : Gabriella from Crumbly baked goods

Welcome to the first ever ROOKIE FEATURE.
In this close and personal interviews we will find out why and what the twenty-something creative rebels are doing. Where they are headed and the amazing journey they have taken to get to fulfill and explore some of their most amazing hidden talents and how some have taken their hobbies to the next level and created a creative outlet for themselves.

In this feature i was able to sit down with Gabriela Chabolla owner and creative director of the cutest brand of sweets you'll ever come across, Crumbly Baked godos in Austin, Texas.

Age : 25
From : Saltillo Coahuila, Mexico
Profession : Advertising. UT graduate.

Gabriela has been a baking enthusiast for about 8 years but in recent months she has found an incredible creative outlet and a way to make a path for herself in the creative world.
I wondered what makes an advertising professional from a renouned university lean towards starting a business in baking.  She says " I am fascinated by pastries, the art I make in each cookie will be appreciated and gone in a minute. " The art she makes indeed will not be hung up in a wall and be appreciated for years, it will be devoured in a second, however there is a lot of beauty in that, specially when such intricate detail comes into play.

Gabriela explaining the process of designing a portrait cookie.

The process:
How does someone with a full time job manage to run a business on her "free" time? Aren't we all living for the day we graduate college so we can gain our life back? Isnt the norm to Clock in and out and maybe go to happy hour?  Well as I'm asking all this questions to Gabriella she chuckles and says " I work 60 hrs a week in my "real" job and since i have very little free time i have learned to work in steps." She says she first focused on getting the recipe for her treats consistent and delicious. The design part is the most exciting part of her new endeavor and what she spends more time on.  It took her  7-8 months and a lot of mistakes just to figure out what she was actually doing. Once that stage was passed and people were ordering treats galore, she knew she was in business.

What inspired you?

In the topic of inspiration Gabriela like most of my creative friends spoke with a lot of passion about what drives her work.
"I love design and branding it pushes me to create something great and put it out there"
The design part which she is obviously great at is a main part of her project, but branding is just as important to her. She believes the web design, business cards and instagram presentation is all a collaborate effort to showcase who you are. She is working always on evolving that brand into something people can recognize and stand out from the rest.

What would you say to the creative that is trying to find their path?

"I am still searching for where I'm  meant to be or where my talents fit in, i feel we all are and its okay. Challenges make your brain work and it keeps you check. Keep experimenting, the road is challenging and blurry at times but you can take small steps to make something different every day. Smalls steps can lead to a great discovery."

It was truly inspiring to sit and talk to someone like Gabriela, she has a passion for design and has a very particular way of expressing her talets.  Her retro chic style  really makes her seem genuine, definately the person you want to have cater your next brunch.

We are all in this journey and it might not be dictated by the graduation date, the major you chose or the first job you ever had. It is time to really learn to applaud those who don't settle, those who don't live by a manual and take a leap of faith in the creative world.

NEWS: Shampoo or not? Facts about the everyday product.

I have read some crazy things about shampoo and  conditioner which well everyone is entitled to their opinion however, if you are using HEAT , COLOR or CHEMICALS on your HAIR chances are the old grandma remedy with vinegar and moon water while dancing around in circles is NOT going to help the condition of your hair.
OUCH!

Cruel world huh?
While id love to join the revolution of at home made shampoos and great diy ways to clean your hair truth is shampoo and conditioner have been a good go-to combo for ages for a reason...well a lot actually, but here's a few :

* Shampoo has the ability to regulate or alter the PH of your hair. Ever wonder why your hair is frizzy, dull or unmanageable? Well believe it or not a lot has to do with the kind of shampoo you are using.
* Home made products can only do so much, while i believe in great scrubs and skin care can be made at home, when it comes to shampoo is like making your own hair medication. Almost no one knows the PH of their hair or how to balance it and when it comes to hair to have it look shiny and perfect has to do with the PH. It is very hard to find this balance in DIY products.

*Professional  Care Shampoos
Your hairdresser knows best!
Most of this shampoo + conditioner combos are called "SYSTEMS" in the professional world because of the work they do TOGETHER. For example while a color protect shampoo can have less sulfates to keep color deposit in place , the ph will still be raised its just how shampoo works. The cleansing agents in a shampoo are meant to clean and slightly open the cuticle of your hair so guess what happens when you don't use a conditioner? of end up using your boyfriends conditioner? well your hair cuticle is all rough and crazy untamable hair and uncontrolled frizz galore!
THIS is why conditioner is important. When you use the combo from the same brand you will have the ultimate result because they are tested for the shampoo to raise PH level to let's say a 7 and the conditioner to bring it back to a normal PH level of 5.

WHEN buying shampoo at the drug store most of this shampoos are made with the cheapest ingredients giving you the bare minimum nutrition to your hair , that is why a bottle only costs 4 dlls.
WHEN you buy a high performance shampoo your stylist most likely is making an educated  recommendation as to why it would benefit you, because a stylist knows your hair story and what your hair needs.

*Store Bought Shampoos :

When buying a shampoo that is "affordable" really understand that you have NO idea what you are using in your hair, skin, eyes, body everywhere that shampoo falls.
A lof to this "NO SHAMPOO" rants i have read about all the terrible chemicals that cause cancer etc well they might or might not be true and that is because THERE is so much in that label that we don't understand and truth is the guy that stocks shampoos at the convenience store has no idea either.
There is plenty of ingredients that are masked to be good like "panthenol" or "keratin" that come in certain shampoos that all they really cost you at the end is an intense scalp treatment and deep conditioner with your professional. There is so much wax and ingredients that can actually damage your hair if you over use them.

This is just surface talk about shampoo but in a nutshell, if you don't know ask a professional they will always know best.
Don't go into a crazy frenzy without being informed also keep in mind there is great brands of professional hair care that carry organic and environmentally friendly products.

If you have any more questions or concerns about your current shampoo
just reach out and touch me!...well maybe not touch but add your concerns to the comment box below!

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!

I am an early bird by nature i feel like if i wake up late half the day is gone.
I  am also a busy bee so i have to be in the go and moving most of the day but theres something about
SUNDAYS
that have me focused in one thing which is RELAX
I give time for prayer and then after for inspiration
I read in a Melissa Loves This a  post that i related to a lot and  made me reflect on the little things.
I usually talk about beauty and products and how to do this and that but really...part of your all around beauty is what you carry inside which makes you carry your self in a more confident and cautious and inspiring way.

So..
The things i have been inspired by today are :

a new book i bought with nylons beauty selections.

it is actually very PRETTY! all of it.

One of my favorite places in the world: My desk + Champagne

Cutest Desk item Ive gotten from my boyfriend . Andy Warhol Inspirational quotes.

I really love to just sit here and be.

Definitely the little things are the ones that count.

have a happy Monday readers.

i love you

Anything Can Happen Saturday! Episode 2

This weekend i planned with my boyfriend the a second edition of what we call
" anything can happen Saturdays"
What this activity consists of is not planning anything at all just getting in the car and picking restaurant at random, activities and places.
I have found it to be incredibly awesome and full of possibilities.
If you know me you'd know i love planning and stressing over perfect outcomes but for once on saturday i DONT have to do any of that isn't it awesome?!

Heres some of the things that happen this saturday

went on a stroll around town after mexican food and margaritas to watch the sunset

then we made a sudden stop at Urban Outfitters where they had a massive sale
i got this TWO pairs of shoes for 10.00 dlls whAAAAAT?

i also fell in love with a lot of stationary, shower caps and finally more blank sheets of paper to fill with thoughts and doodles. You know me... I will be a teen forever

What's best than stumble upon nail art books and 90s books on SALE?! well it only got better by a tiny bit with those awesome buttons!

We ended our night coming home to a pajama 90's party!
my boyfriend made pineapple mango tequila shooters and watched the 100 greatest songs of the 90s!
then i totally passed out on my couch with a full heart because you know//... I'm a 90s baby.

Im so in love with all my cheap finds i found at Urban Outfitters it totally made my weekend

how was your weekend? would you try anything can happen saturday?

Floral in spring? Groundbreaking.

It has been very rainy around here this past couple of days so in days that are more gloomy
i tend to create my own happiness.
I think i have mentioned that i have been really into nail art and i have been practicing nail art on myself a lot! i find that it gives me a lot of peace just sitting there doing doodles on my nails.
I have always liked manicures but now that nails speak so much about ourselves I've been extra interested in the art.

This weeks mani due to the rainy days i decided to try a floral design.
i am calling this nail arts of mine manicutes.
What do you think?
Would you all be interested in tutorials on how to create your own?
let me know!
have an amazing week people

Dry HAIR NO MORE!

My favorite item of the month is definitely Dry Remedy oil

Its made out of buriti which is a fruit found in water it adds moisture to the hair from the inside out. It is the next level to any oil you can imagine because the difference between any silicon based finishing oil which has silicon to coat the hair and make it "appear" smooth or shiny with this dry remedy oil its a pure essential oil 99% naturally derived it has no toxins, no silicons, no nonsense!
It will improve the condition of your hair by 41% and its a softness you can feel as soon as you put it on. Its so light that won't weight down your style or make your scalp feel greasy. In the contrary i have dry scalp due to the cold weather and this oil has helped control it too!

I actually love the fact that aveda always has a mission on protecting the planet and helping the people by doing ethical product helping communities get water and buying the actual BURITI plant from villages of people that collect them proving means of survival to many families that work picking out the plant. Isn't it awesome?
It's always a relief when you can buy a product and know that you are not feeding a greedy monster but helping sustain hard work and life in third world countries.

You can get your hands on this beauty at any AVEDA experience centers or At your Nearest AVEDA salon.
If you are in the Austin area get it at Jackson Ruiz Salon !

I found a video of how this oil is made. Its so rad. Cruelty free and products with conscience rock!

What do you think? have you used dry remedy?

Reader Question Answered : Help! Frizz Ball ALERT!

So here's the thing we ALL deal with the frizz issue at some point of another. Some of us have curly hair, some straight and guess what...frizz is still an issue!

At some point in our lives our texture changes in fact it changes about 3 times in our existence and not to be alarmed it doesnt mean you are getting old..well maybe a little but not in a bad way.

Our hair changes texture with age and time. It also changes depending on our hormone levels and lifestyle changes.  It is always easy to blame it on the environment or your shampoo but realistically sometimes we just need to look deep at our body and understand the changes.

Here's a Few reasons why you hair might be giving you hell and how to tackle the issue:

  1.  Age + Hormones : It is  completely normal to notice that your hair turned into something you are not used to and it frizzes more than it ever did. If your hair is straight and now has a subtle wave i recommend to change your shampoo to a hydrating shampoo.  It is important to always be attentive to how our hair behaves because it might just mean a change of texture that happens with the dreaded word "age" and we need to probably change shampoo, products and have a talk with our stylist.
  2. Humidity + Weather: Sometimes there is just too much moisture in the air. Even when your hair needs moisture the environmental moisture is not necessarily your best friend. For this type of weather i like to make sure i stick to my natural texture of hair. Using a hair serum  for styling and a moisture block hair spray to secure your style should be enough to keep your hair controlled. Also avoid taking long walks in the park if its terribly humid and you don't want your hair to frizz up!
  3. Over processed + Lack of Protein: Often the hair tends to be all over the place because the chemical process it has gone through have destroyed or damaged the hair cuticle. Our hair cuticle is the main and most important part of our hair , since its responsible for shine and control. If the hair cuticle is open and unable to open or protect the hair you will get frizzy and unmanageable hair. The best tip if you have had chemical processes on your hair and it no longer wants to be caressed by the wind, Is to do a deep conditioner treatment preferably one that contains Keratin protein. Keratin protein is the most likely to our hairs chemical makeup which means it fills in the hair making it look smooth and makes that cuticle seal.
  4.  Lack of MOISTURE : The hair needs the right amount of moisture like i mentioned but not the environmental moisture or just water. Hair needs to be treated with a type of moisture that can be deposited into your hair. The easiest way to get this type of moisture is with a PROFESSIONAL shampoo system. By system i mean SHAMPOO + CONDITIONER. I cannot stress enough how important it is to condition the hair after shampooing it. Frizz a lot of times is caused by mix + match shampoo and conditioners. Most shampoos from the same brand and type tend to have same PH levels which allow the shampoo and conditioner to work at its best. I have been using Aveda products. AMAZING. Which ever brand you choose make sure you consult with your stylist before purchasing or you can always consult with me ! via CONTACT ME email.
This are the main reasons why hair tends to be frizzy and easy ways on how to correct the issue. If you give this a try and are still having issues you might need a good consultation with your stylist or ME

Fall Trends 2013 !

I am so in LOVE with the Fall trends
Because i live in Texas and the heat is exhausting i am ALWAYS waiting for Fall!
Im so excited to use DARK lip stick and channel my inner goth that always comes in and out since i wear black mostly every day.
Over my week vacation i have been watching a lot the fashion shows online obsessing over all that is to come this fall and winter.
My favorite one and one trend that i must confess i have been already using is the NAIL polish.
#1 Wine Color  or Plum nail polish. YUM!
since i wear a lot of black and i work with hair all day i sometimes like to wear darker shades of nail polish, so now i'm finally in with the trend. I bough an awesome wine color at  Forever 21 "night moves" it has great shine and it lasts. only $2.80 dlls.

#2 Curly + Messy hair is very much in, so ladies get your hot rollers ready!
I  have naturally curly hair and like i said on my previous post i am trying to grow it out so i can rock one of this looks! Isnt it fun?!

# 3 Messy buns with a lot of volume ! This is a very 60's vibe and i LOVE it. I am obsessed with the vintage styles and seeing them as a trend this season makes me VERY happy!

#4 Wine LIPS ... not the kind you get on sunday morning after a long girls night in but the ones that make your face look 10 x brighter and create awesome contrast on your look.
Feeling goth yet?

The rainy weather and cloudy days in mexico have had me feeling a little nostalgic but with a lot of peace.
Hope everyone has a great week and if you have any other hair inspiration or makeup please do share below!

much love,

cindilu

Long Hair TIPS!

i am on vacation so here i am writing not in my desk and at my comfort but writing none the less.

Heres a hot hot topic i talk about a lot with my clients.

Today i want to talk about i LOVE the most which is... HAIR.
We all dream of having an amazing long mane and keep it healthy but really i have MANY , many clients and friends facing the same issue... SPLIT ENDS
and the common dialogue goes something like this..
"i need my hair to grow! so please don't cut it, i just cant afford to lose any length"
and to this i say YOU NEED to cut all the dead ends before you can grow it, your hair is like a plant. Picture a really pretty rose plant with yellow and dry leaves all over. Yeah its a nice plant but if you want to keep it blooming you need to cut the dead leaves off!
Same goes with hair.
If i can give you any good advice about growing you hair is CUT it as odd as this advice sounds.

Rule #1 Keep up with your trim Every 4 weeks. It is necessary to be in a regimen and keep up trimming as its growing so you can see good results.

Rule #2 Do avoid using HEAT on your hair. Do more air dry, braids, top knots etc. Keeping your hair under less stress and letting it be and enjoy your natural texture.

Rule #3 Use a moisturizing shampoo. If anything keeping your hair hydrated at all times specially with this process.

Rule #4 If you are chemically dependent (color your hair) you need to add an intensive treatment. THIS IS A MUST. Ask your stylist for a regimen of hair treatments to aid the process

There is no secret shampoo that will make it grow faster or secret ways to make this work. Its discipline. Listen to your body. Eat right, drink as much water as you can.

See the results!
Remember i am in the same journey as you  and i too want to have long hair by fall and its quickly approaching!

Any additional suggestions or tips you have done on your own? Share with us!

Weekend Trendz + Nude Makeup

This weekend i plan to relax and be a little effortless that is why this weekend trend is going to be very minimal and fresh! I love the effortless look on nude makeup. However if you are going to the all natural look don't forget to enhance it with some eyelashes. I can honestly say i'm addicted to lashes.. yes guilty!
When you don't want to do much in your makeup having some falsies can definitely open your eyes and make your best face feature (the window to your soul) POP.
What are your makeup guilty pleasures?! do tell in the comment box below

Happy Weekend!!

Shaving Cream Quick Fix !

As i have shared with you before i have been out of my comfort zone this past week and i took an adventure with my mother to Louisiana, Mexico and back to my college town to reunite with friends. Everything is fun and games until you realize its SUMMER time in the Texas heat and you forgot your shaving cream.   yeah, PANIC + FREAKOUT!

After i ran around freaking out my mom suggested for me to use my shampoo and make a lot of foam before shaving , to which i replied " YOU ARE CRAZY! my legs are going to be red for a year!"
However since i had no other option i decided to use my daily shampoo. I use the Paul Mitchell Lavender Mint Moisturizing shampoo.
This shampoo is amazing for dry and curly hair since i tend to have both its my favorite shampoo.   Who knew that after using it as a shaving cream my legs were going to be THAT soft.
NO JOKE, NO LIE GIRL.
It was amazing and i am seriously considering it as part of my daily routine.

Another good fact about this shampoo is that it has tea tree on it (well duh!) which is an anti fungal so if you were to get a cut from your razor it will help fight infection!
its a great mosquito repellent yes plzz!!!!!
can i get a hellz yeah!?

WIN + WIN

If you don't think you want to try this ... go ahead but do think of me when you forget your shaving equipment miles away from home.

Ultimate Face Cosmetics: Molding Artist + Shaping Futures.

This past November i was honored to attend my third Ultimate Face Cosmetics training held at Paul Mitchell The school. This make up company is one of my favorite lines for professionals and I'll tell you why. Ultimate face has a big compromise with professional makeup as well as the products this line provides. They are a company founded to supprot and educate professional make up artist, as opposed to big name brands they are dedicated to travel the world providing training and knowledge to the professionals, building trust for their brand.

This company has been founded by visionaries in the beauty industry, hard working people with a vision and a commitment. Laurie is a huge inspiration to me because she has built this company with her husband and their success comes from doing what you feel right in your heart. They are a great example of a helping company. They want to set up professionals for success and they are doing it.
I feel extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to meet this great entrepreneurs and leaders.

The company co-owner Laurie Spellman and her team of talented artists held a very intense training about color laws, highlighting and contouring for every day looks, photography and runway.

I have a very special place in my heart for ultimate face because they not only have the original mineral makeup but they are committed to creating products that are animal cruelty free, with less harmful chemicals and durable synthetic brushes.  It really gives a peace of mind knowing that you are performing makeup services , applying beautiful colors with products that did not harmed any living creature in the process.

For the longest time i thought i was not capable of doing makeup until i attended the first UFC class, from there i have attended 3 and i will continue to attend their classes. I now feel comfortable with the skills they have taught me and look forward to one day be an educator for this awesome brand!

If you have not jumped on the Ultimate Face wagon i invite you to learn more about their training classes, seminars and certifications.  Click HERE for more info on how you too can be a national makeup artist!
