Editorial work in progress...

This past couple of months I have had the pleasure of working with some amazing
top models and wardrobe stylist that have inspired me greatly.
I don't even know how things come together sometimes, but they do.

Collaborations like I've said before, are a great part of my career and collaborations are the best!
Here is a little something about collaborating that I have found out :

1. It only works if you find value in the work the other person is providing.

2. It usually never pays but it builds all the relationships you will ever need.
I HATE when people complain about free collabs, like really? i think I've mentioned before, we are all trying to make it can you relax?

3. It expands the creative vision. Get real, we are not all geniuses, the more people that
you can share an idea with, the more they will expand it and turn it into
something great!

Anyway...here is a few of the snapshots and behind the scenes of who i have been collaborating with

Happy Monday!

Friday Adventures : Behind the Scenes.

As an artist I always enjoy behind the scenes photos, some might believe they are pointless
however, to me , behind the scenes inspire me.
They might be more geared towards industry interest but actually a lot of my clients enjoy looking at what their hairdresser is up to when not behind the chair.

This are some pics of this past collaboration with Ethan, Nina, Cy also the peeps at NO COMMENT magazine and FOUND from Austin,Tx

Can't wait to see the final work .....stay tuned!

BEHIND THE SCENES: COLLABORATE

Many artists i have come across specially NEW artist have me in shock when they say " I don't collaborate, i can only do it if there is compensation" whoa!
This is always a shock to me because i believe that to be able to charge and gain credibility as a charging artist you need:
Credentials (schooling, certification), Expertise (years or experience in the field), Hefty Resume/Portfolio
If you have one or neither of this and feel weird about collaboration please keep reading.
Hair prep!

If you are interested in the paying gigs you must know that people willing to pay you want to see how amazing you are, the things you have worked on and how much your work is worth.

For a lot of us the challenge right out of school or beginning in the creative field is that we are all qualified, we went to school, we can do the job but we don't have anything to show for it,
by that i mean the expertise , the resume and the portfolio.

The easiest and best way to build your brand is believe it or not COLLABORATING.
My boss ALLEN RUIZ always says "What we do at work fills our pockets, what we do outside of work fills our hearts" It is SO true. Not only do you do what you love and have full creative freedom when you collaborate in projects but you also you get to network and build your brand as an individual creative.

The importance of being qualified is just as equal as to be experienced, the experience you will get on sets you can't really measure in money.  Me for example working with my friend Cyler we both work late nights at the salon followed by an early morning after that we collaborate with Photographers. Yes it is our weekend and yes we would rather be having a margarita, but truth is we love what we do so much that being on a set on a late weekend night really fills our bucket.
Even though i don't get paid i can tell you i have met some incredible models (for future projects) I've strengthen my skills and i get to create beautiful images for my portfolio.

It is very true that your brand will be built based on the people you work with, so choose who you want to collaborate with, if your collaboration won't grow you or showcase your work at your standard its okay to say no, however always keep in mind you want to leave a window open instead of shutting the door ,tearing the castle down and burn the bridge.

Be polite, be kind and be TRUE with you art.
But most of all BE HUMBLE , people don't want to work with a "know it all" or a "been there done that" type of person.
Find people that speak your creative language, that are willing to put in the work you are putting in, have similar creative eyes and people you just really enjoy working with. I promise it won't feel like work and it will expand your portfolio and skills.

I am always open for collaborations so please contact me with any inquiries or questions in CONTACT page

also THANKS TO:
Kristyn Miller for the great studio experience
+
Cyler Daigle for being  super to collaborate with and great Makeup artist

NEWS: New Comer Stylist of The Year Finalist Adventure

It has been a crazy and hectic month!
I am thrilled to let you all know i have been selected in the prestigious competition North america Hair Styling Awards as a New Comer of the year Finalist!

It has been such a journey and i am completely humbled and honored to be part of such an amazing competition and group of professionals. If you have been reading this blog in its many stages , you must have seen me be part of the student competiton 3 years ago for Beacon.

It definately sparked a fire in me to grow and gain skills to be able to produce a NAHA worthy photoshoot. I am very proud of the fact i have been able to accomplish such shoot and be part of the finalist this summer in Las Vegas, NV
check out all the other finalist here :
I cannot stress enough how important it is to expand your skill out of beauty school, beauty school is a great place to find your calling and learn basics but it is definitely not ALL you want to know.
Make attainable goals and do a little something each day to take you there, gather your tribe, make your team of people be the ones that encourage your creative nerve and you will be surprised how soon you will be on your way.

My collection and vision came from a New comer point of view, i wanted to show beauty coming through the cracks of a wall. I have heard a saying "life always finds a way" i wanted to portrait beauty and talent finding a way as a new comer.
so this is what i came up with :

It is with great HONOR to be a real Beauty ROOKIE in the world of beauty and be able to showcase my work in front of thousands of hair dressers from all over the globe.

This little victories and stepping stones in my career is what makes the hard work worth it.
I also chose to change my blog into a ROOKIE blog to have that window to connect with people in the same path i'm in. It is the new talent and the young professionals that need inspiration, we need to lift each other up and inspire each other!

A quick note on that, I have been very cautious in what and how i celebrate this huge accomplishment being scared of sounding over confident, but i realized this really doesn't happen often for me and i do want to celebrate with everyone and enjoy this!
I have always been last choice for almost everything in my life, not great at sports, not good at math,  i've almost always been the underdog.  This experience has boosted my confidence not in the professional field only but as a woman. It is my turn and it is okay to be proud. I am not an underdog at this moment, i am a confident girl that found something she is GOOD at with dreams and goals seeing them unfold right in front of her eyes.
What if a few think you are too confident? what if a few try to tone your mood down? SMILE and say THANKS but i will keep doing my thing this way and give them some shades if your sparkle bothers them.

we can all reach that north star if we keep inspired focused and believe in the beauty of our everyday work.
